The Squeaky Door

Once upon a time, there was a little Boy who lived with his Grandma.  I don't know why he lived with Grandma.  He just did!

Everything in that little Boy's life was just perfect except for one thing.  On his bedroom, there was a squeaky door.  (Pretend to hold out your hand and grasp a doorknob.)  Every night when the Boy was "almost" asleep, the door would go... (Pretend to pull the door closed and make your squeakiest sound.  Caution children to not be too loud making the sound if in larger groups.)

When the door would go... (repeat the closing and squeaking), the Boy would go... "AHHHH!" (Hold your thumbs close to the ears, and wiggle your fingers - while pretending to scream.)

Then, Grandma would come running up the stairs. (Have listeners place their hands on their laps and begin to pat their hands to make a running sound.  It helps to coach the listeners to stop the sound when the teller holds out his/her outstretched hands to the sides.)  And, brother, would Grandma ever be MAD - MAD - MAD!  (Wag your finger at the listeners, and get a little louder with each repetition of "mad.")

Then, Grandma would give him a piece of her mind that couldn't be beat!  (Touch your head when saying mind, and hit your one fist into the other open hand to punctuate the word "beat.")  That means she would be really angry at him.  But, by the next night, Grandma would cool down considerably, being the way that Grandma's are.  We all know that Grandmas love their grandchildren!

Then Grandma would say, "Grandson, I hope you won't be afraid of that door tonight."

And the Boy would say, "I won't be afraid.  I promise!"  (While saying, "I won't be afraid." - point at self with index finger.  While saying, "I promise," clasp hands together as if praying.)

"Well, that's good." said Grandma, and she'd give him a big kiss goodnight.  (Make a loud smacking sound with your lips like giving a juicy kiss.  Children also like it when the teller pretends to wipe off the kiss.  Go "Yuck, yuck, yuck, oooh!" while pretending to wipe off the kiss and throw it away.)

Then Grandma would walk down the stairs... (use two fingers to simulate walking down steps) ... lay her head on the pillow... (put both hands under your head and tip your head to one side, pretending to close your eyes) ... and was almost asleep... when...

The door would go, "SQUEAK!"  And the Boy would go, "AHHH"  And Grandma would go running up the stairs and, brother, would she ever be, "MAD - MAD  MAD!"  Then, she'd give him a piece of her mind that "couldn't be beat!"

But, by the next night, Grandma would cool down considerably, being the way that Grandmas are, and she'd say, "Now, Grandson, I hope you won't be afraid of that door tonight!"

And the Boy would say, "I won't be afraid!  I promise!"

"Well, that's good," said Grandma... "But, just to be sure, tonight, I'm letting you sleep with the Puppy Dog."

"I LIKE Puppy Dogs," said the Boy.  (Clasp hands tightly in joy while saying this.)

Then Grandma gave him a big kiss goodnight, walked down the stairs and put her head on the pillow and was ALMOST asleep...

When the door went, "SQUEAK!"  And the Boy went, "AHHH"  And the Puppy Dog went, "Bark, Bark, Bark!"  (Cup hands by mouth while pretenting to bark.)  Grandma went running up the stairs and, brother, was she ever, "MAD - MAD  MAD!"  Then, she gave him a piece of her mind that "couldn't be beat!"

But, by the next night, Grandma cooled down considerably, being the way that Grandmas are, and she said, "Now, Grandson, I hope you won't be afraid of that door tonight!"

And the Boy said, "I won't be afraid!  I promise!"

"Well, that's good," said Grandma... "But, just to be sure, tonight, I'm letting you sleep with the Puppy Dog AND the Kitty Cat."

"I LIKE Kitty Cats," said the Boy.

"That's good!" said Grandma, and she gave him a big kiss goodnight, walked down the stairs and put her head on the pillow and was ALMOST asleep...

When the door went, "SQUEAK!"  And the Boy went, "AHHH"  And the Puppy Dog went, "Bark, Bark, Bark!"  And the Kitty Cat went, "Meow!"  (Repeat actions for scream, for dog, and hold hands up with fingers bent over like claws while meowing.) Grandma went running up the stairs and, brother, was she ever, "MAD - MAD  MAD!"  Then, she gave him a piece of her mind that "couldn't be beat!"

"But, just to be sure, tonight, I'm letting you sleep with the Puppy Dog, the Kitty Cat, and... the Billy Goat."

"I LIKE Billy Goats," said the Boy.

"That's good!" said Grandma, and she gave him a big kiss goodnight, walked down the stairs and put her head on the pillow and was ALMOST asleep...

When the door went, "SQUEAK!"  And the Boy went, "AHHH"  And the Puppy Dog went, "Bark, Bark, Bark!"  And the Kitty Cat went, "Meow!"  And the Billy Goat went, "Baaah!"  (Repeat actions for scream, for dog and cat and hold hands down while lifting head up like a braying goat.) Grandma went running up the stairs and, brother, was she ever, "MAD - MAD  MAD!"  Then, she gave him a piece of her mind that "couldn't be beat!"

"But, just to be sure, tonight, I'm letting you sleep with ... the Horse!"

"I LIKE Horses," said the Boy.

"That's good!" said Grandma, and she gave him a big kiss goodnight, walked down the stairs and put her head on the pillow and was ALMOST asleep...

When the door went, "SQUEAK!"  And the Boy went, "AHHH"  And the Puppy Dog went, "Bark, Bark, Bark!"  And the Kitty Cat went, "Meow!"  And the Billy Goat went, "Baaah!" And the Horse went "Neigh!"  (Repeat actions for scream, for dog and cat and the goat.  For the horse, raise both hands high in the air like a horse rearing up on its hind legs and waving the front legs in the air - then let the hands fall to your thighs.)

Grandma started running up the stairs!  (Clap hands on thighs rapidly.)

But, DOWN past Grandma ran the Billy Goat!  (Clap hands rapidly on thighs. - and pause slightly before each statement that follows.)

Down past Grandma ran the Kitty Cat.

Down past Grandma ran the Puppy dog.

Down past Grandma ran the little boy.

And Grandma turned around, and she went running down the stairs. She got out of the house just in time, because the horse went "CRASH" through the floor.  (Tell listeners to put their hands high in the air.  Visually shake your hands, so the listeners can copy your behavior.)  And the walls of the house fell DOWN!  (Clap hands together on the word DOWN.)

And believe you me, was Grandma ever... MAD - MAD - MAD!  ... Until... she went over to the neighbors and borrowed the telephone (Hold hand up to side of face - pretending to talk on phone.) and called her insurance agent.

The agent came out to the house and said, "Oh, Grandma, you've got problems!"  Then, the agent wrote her a check so she and her Grandson could stay at the local hotel until the house was fixed.  Then, the agent wrote her another check to give the builders.  But, before Grandma paid the builders, she went from room to room to room to... room - making sure there were ... no more squeaky doors.

Then, the story ends like a fairy tale, because night after night, Grandma slept... "HAPPILY EVER AFTER."

The end!
